Potentiometric measurement by pH meter

Clinical indication

Urinary pH measurement is important in assessment of renal stones or crystals, in therapeutic interventions to either alkalinize or acidify the urine.

It is also useful in evaluation of systemic acid-base disorder.
Result interpretation

Interpretation is dependent on clinical conditions.

Urine pH may be influenced by diets, e.g. a diet rich in meats may be more acidic than a vegetarian diet.  Alkaline urine may be suggestive of urinary tract infections or in an old unpreserved urine specimen.
